Rising Voices of Asian American Families & Rising Voices of Asian American Families Action Fund

Rising Voices of Asian American Families (a 501(c)(3) organization) and Rising Voices of Asian American Families Action Fund (a 501(c)(4) organization) are newly formed grassroots organizations focusing on civic engagement and intersectional community organizing with and for Asian American women and families in Michigan.

We are seeking an experienced, self-motivated, dynamic Field Director to join our team full-time, split between the (c)(3) organization and the (c)(4) organization. We seek to build the strongest and most innovative Asian American grassroots organizing operation in Michigan to increase civic engagement and participation of one of the fastest growing populations in the state, particularly with Census 2020 and the 2020 elections.

This will require empowering volunteers, activist leaders, and supporters to organize their communities around progressive policies affecting Asian American families in Michigan. The Field Director will primarily be responsible for recruiting volunteer leaders, developing and training volunteers, and managing direct Census and voter contact in Southeast and West Michigan. The Field Director will also coordinate community events. The Field Director reports to the Board of Directors.

Essential Duties:

  • Build and manage a field team to plan and execute complex field plans related to Census 2020 and the 2020 elections – identify, recruit, train and develop volunteer leaders and canvassers

  • Set, meet and exceed benchmarks for voter contact, volunteer recruitment, grassroots engagement and GOTV

  • Design and standardize best practices for data management using voter file software

  • Manage the field program budget and logistics

  • Build meaningful relationships with volunteers, Asian American community organizations, and supporters

  • Directly supervise a full or part-time fellow, canvassers, and volunteers

  • Organize events such as community potlucks, forums on issues, and community meetings

  • Identify supporters in assigned regions

  • Establish and maintain a strong organizational culture focused on accountability, specific goals, innovation and sense of purpose

  • Use digital tools to support organizing on the ground

  • This role will involve daily driving

  • Other duties as assigned

  • NOTE: More than 50 percent of the Field Director’s duties is out of the office and involves interfacing with members of the community, partner organizations, etc.

 

 

Qualifications:

  • Comfortable and experienced working with diverse groups of people across a wide spectrum of ethnicities, gender identities, ages, religious affiliations, and with varying English-language proficiency levels

  • Experience managing, training, and motivating high performing team members to meet recruitment and voter contact goals; should have experience on three electoral, community organizing, education, or union campaigns (paid or unpaid) or equivalent nonprofit experience

  • Experience with and ability to train canvassers and volunteers on VoteBuilder (VAN)

  • Strong communication and organizational skills, showing attention to detail

  • Ability to write and implement a comprehensive, data-driven field plan

  • Ability to multitask and manage multiple projects simultaneously (such as canvasses and townhalls)

  • Ability to create and achieve goals, meet deadlines and creatively solve problems

  • Strong initiative, ability to be a self-starter with willingness to learn and adapt

  • Ability to take feedback and implement changes in real time

  • Good listening skills

  • Must have own reliable transportation

  • Asian language skills (preferred, not required)
