COMMUNICATIONS MANAGER/DIRECTOR

POSITION DESCRIPTION 

Rising Voices is a fiscally sponsored project of the Center for Empowered Politics, a 501(c)4 nonprofit organization, that seeks to organize and develop the leadership of Asian American women, families and young people for power around progressive values and policy in the state of Michigan through community and cultural organizing, electoral engagement, and policy advocacy for a future where all families can thrive. 

 

We are seeking a Communications Manager to elevate the organization's narrative, and create culturally competent communications entry points for AAPI Michiganders to engage with the organization's work. Depending on experience, this position has the possibility of transitioning to Director of Communications.  This position will be shared with our sister entity Rising Voices Fund, a fiscally sponsored project of the Center for Empowered Politics Education Fund, a separate 501(c)3 organization.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Press Relations 

● Bottom-line all external and public facing communications including newsletters, email blasts, press releases, draft rapid response language, statements and other items for publication 

● Develop a press communications plan that will expand and maintain press/media contact lists, including ethnic media 

● Serve as initial primary contact for all media inquiries 

 

Base Engagement 

● Work with the Co-Executive Director for Communications and Digital Organizer to execute a strategic digital engagement program that includes new emergent platforms to engage community members and convert digital engagement into in-person engagement. 

● Oversee translation needs for Rising Voices outreach and communications content and collaborate with partners via translation workgroups 

● Act as primary contact for the We Make Michigan Race Class Narrative cohort to ensure messaging continuity with our partners

● Develop internal and external processes for staff storytelling and media training; vetting/training spokespeople; working with consultants 

● Supervise long and short-term project planning and management for content creation and creative media production in collaboration with the Rising Voices Cultural Strategist 

 

Electoral Communications 

● Oversee paid electoral and GOTV static/digital/video advertising campaigns 

● Research and develop targeted messaging for directed mail and advertising campaigns ● Manage production vendor/consultant relationships 

 

Administrative 

  • Manage Communications Department budget development and tracking

  • Oversee archival of press hits and communications content Provide and interpret analytics to track Rising Voices’ reach across our digital platforms 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS 

● At least 5 years of in communications/media narrative work 

● Knowledge of and demonstrated cultural competency with the Michigan Asian American community 

● Experience leading teams and managing staff 

● Experience with digital organizing and social media analytics 

● Experience with CRMs and peer-to-peer texting services 

● Ability to speak, read, and write in an Asian language preferred but not required ● Ability to react quickly to the fast-paced news cycle 

● Ability to execute projects in an organized and timely manner 

● Ability to accept and offer constructive feedback 

● Knowledge of graphic design, photo/video editing software desired but not required

SALARY & BENEFITS

  • This position has an estimated salary range of 60k to 70k depending on experience and hire/promotion from Communications Manager to Director of Communications.

  • This position is non-exempt.

SOCIAL MEDIA MANAGER

POSITION DESCRIPTION 

As a power-building organization, Rising Voices is committed to building a digital outreach program as a key component to building unity, collaboration, and civic participation in our Asian American communities. Digital content is incorporated in Rising Voices advocacy campaigns as a means to provide civic and resource information, amplify the visibility of Asian Americans in Michigan, provide visioning for a just and diverse future as well as advance Rising Voices’ organizing and electoral objectives. 

 

With the goal of integrating community members in a progressive ladder of engagement, the Social Media Manager will be responsible for bridging Rising Voices’ digital outreach with our in-person organizing and electoral programs to expand our base and create an established digital presence for the organization.

  • Create engaging and informative social media content for multiple platforms to highlight issues and organizational statements, engage community members and convert digital engagement into in-person activation. 

  • Maintain constant social media stream on Facebook/Twitter/Instagram/TikTok/WhatsApp and other digital platforms with one to two posts a day on FB, Twitter, Instagram

  • Meet with Communications, Policy and Organizing Directors on a weekly basis to map out social media strategy for campaign support

  • Attend weekly staff meetings as well as weekly production meetings with Digital Organizer and Cultural Strategist

  • Find potential members and activists online and further develop those relationships through phone, video, and in-person communications to be folded into organizing programs. 

  • In coordination with Cultural Strategist, establish relationships with social media influencers to develop a strong network

  • Manage content development, designer commissions, vendors and platform guest takeovers

  • Curate repostings from partner organizations or relevant news and write appropriate toplines that include tags to amplify partners

  • Respond to direct messaging inquiries via social media platforms

  • Define KPIs and KRAs for social media campaigns

  • Track and report regularly on key performance metrics to demonstrate improved engagement and growth. 

  • Use social media marketing tools such as Buffer and Hootsuite

  • Monitor SEO and web traffic metrics

  • Maintain awareness of social media trends and incorporate them into digital strategy when appropriate

SKILLS/QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience in creating social media strategies and long-term campaigns

  • Knowledge of best practices for social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, Pinterest, etc.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

  • Creative ability to craft engaging content

  • Organized and able to multitask

EDUCATION CAMPAIGN COORDINATOR

POSITION DESCRIPTION 

We are looking for an Education Campaign Coordinator to help coordinate a statewide effort to plan, organize, and fight for a mandated multiracial history curriculum in Michigan’s K-12 public schools. This is a project based position estimated to end on or around December 31, 2024 but has a possible extension dependent on organizational funding and need.

 

The Education Campaign Coordinator will work in coalition with other BIPOC-led groups representing students, educators, and caregivers across the state to build a grassroots-led issue-based campaign. This is an opportunity for a strategic and collaborative individual to build relationships, engage in policy making, organize strategy sessions, and train community members on legislative advocacy and direct action. The ideal candidate will have some experience in policy-related work, an understanding of education policy and issues, and an interest in cross-racial and multigenerational solidarity and coalition building.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

 

Coordinate Coalition Campaign Work

  • In collaboration with the Legislative and Political Director, develop and maintain relationships with external coalition members, community members, and key policymakers and influencers in state and local government

  • Conduct regular one-on-one meetings with potential coalition members and community members

  • Work with staff, coalitions, and community members to plan, organize, and coordinate campaign plans and strategies to build support for a grassroots-led campaign

  • Schedule and coordinate meetings between coalition, community members and policymakers

  • Facilitate and share progress updates during coalition meetings and membership meetings, collect and incorporate feedback from members 

  • Manage and track campaign progress to report to the Legislative and Political Director and interested parties 

 

Policy Advocacy 

  • Research, draft, edit, and analyze local and state education policies

  • Prepare and present digestible policy briefs and updates to staff, coalitions, and community members

  • Assist in planning and executing community advocacy day(s) 

  • General policy work support 

 

Communications and Messaging 

  • Draft persuasive messaging, reports, one-pagers, and social media posts regarding the campaign

  • Provide support to the communications team to create visual content to be distributed across Rising Voices and coalition member platforms 

SKILLS/QUALIFICATIONS

  • Align with Rising Voices’s Mission and Values

  • At least 1 year of policy and community building experience; internship experience counts

  • Familiarity and lived experiences with issues facing AAPI, BIPOC and/or other marginalized communities 

  • Some familiarity with the Michigan legislative, K-12 education, and/or school board processes 

  • Strong relationship-building skills, persistent and friendly 

  • Ability to facilitate meetings for general members and coalitions

  • Prior experience in building power through organizing issue-based campaigns preferred

  • Ability to maintain competing priorities and respond to legislative developments quickly 

  • Attention to detail and ability to respond to a fast-paced environment

  • Strong writing, administrative, and organizational skills

  • Fluency in an Asian language is a plus but not required

SALARY & BENEFITS 

This is a full time non-exempt position starting at $25/hour. Rising Voices offers all employees full health, vision, and dental coverage, workers comp, long-term disability, basic life insurance and 401K retirement plan. Earned paid time off, including vacation, personal, and sick time. A phone and work from home stipend is also included in this position. Rising Voices is a unionized workplace and this position is eligible to be part of the union bargaining unit.
