ABOUT US

Our issues include youth and women empowerment, increased language access, revenue generation and increased resources for our communities especially for culturally competent health care, education, immigrants, and low-wage workers, particularly through this current pandemic.

Our theory of change includes multiple strategies for power, developing leadership and organizing capacity within Asian American communities and targeting Asian American women and young people in particular around relational organizing and political education will move local state and federal progressive policy and help elect progressive candidates to champion those issues. We believe that an election is an opportunity to increase engagement and build organizing relationships with our constituency, and that positive electoral and policy wins are one tool for empowering our communities. Election cycles are opportunities for leadership development and candidate recruitment through the organizing process.

COMMUNITY ORGANIZING

Our work with local Michiganders focuses on deep grassroots organizing, bringing together residents to advocate for their families and loved ones on matters ranging from inclusive schools, access to welfare resources, public safety and other issues relevant to our communities. We host a member meeting every third Thursday of the month. Join us this month as we continue to build power for our communities.

TEACH MI HISTORY

Teach Ml History is a statewide coalition of parents, students, educators, and community members advocating for inclusive K-12 history curriculum in our public schools. Research shows that students learn better, feel more confident, and foster empathy when they see themselves reflected in what they study. With over 500,000 BIPOC students in Michigans, our schools must teach a curriculum that reflect their stories.

RISING VOICES AMPLIFY

Our cultural organizing uplifts the work of Asian American artists who celebrate our communities’s histories, heritage and narratives to provide crucial representation of the Asian American experience while presenting visionary perspectives of a brighter future we hope to build.

ELECTIONS & CIVIC ENGAGEMENT

Rising Voices engages the Michigan Asian American community by organizing voters to participate in local, state and federal elections, foster the development of Asian American candidates, organize election protection support and provide culturally-competent, relational organizing and in-language political education resources.

LAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT: Rising Voices is based in stolen occupied territories called Waawiiyaataanong, named by the Anishinaabeg and includes the Three Fires Confederacy of Ojibwe (Chippewa), Odawa (Ottawa), and Bodewatomi (Potawatomi) peoples. We acknowledge that Asian American immigration is part of the history of settler colonialism and  that all Indigenous peoples have and continue to be forcibly removed from their homelands. Rising Voices stands in solidarity with Black and Indigenous communities who continue to be systemically excluded and oppressed through the ongoing damaging effects of settler colonialism, genocide, and myths of white supremacy.
