Rising Voice is outraged by Michigan House Speaker Matt Hall’s reckless handling of the state budget. After months of stalling, House Republicans dropped budget bills last month without advance notice or committee hearings. All 110 legislators had less than 60 minutes to read through 808 pages of the appropriation bill that will decide the fate of the FY 2026 fiscal budget, which is incredibly appalling and is not done in the best interest of all Michiganders. This is not governing; it is sabotage.

Adding insult to injury, after missing the constitutional deadline of July 1st to pass a state budget, Michigan Republicans chose to take a page out of President Trump’s playbook and make catastrophic cuts to essential services. In total, the Republicans‘ budget cuts over $5 billion dollars in funding for healthcare, food safety programs, educational programs, civil rights, and many more services that our Asian American community benefits from everyday.

During this time, our state government should be working together to fill the gaps of the disastrous cuts made at the federal level. Many different organizations, including Michigan’s most well known hospital advocates, have sounded the alarm on the need for the state to step in and fill that gap. Rather than listen to the experts, Michigan Republicans passed a budget that lacked both critical funding and transparency, allowing no time for questions or suggestions from anybody, including our communities. This is a betrayal to all Michiganders and not how our lawmakers should be governing. Please call upon your state senators and urge them to correct these horrendous mistakes by the Michigan House Republicans and pass an equitable, balanced, and fair budget to benefit all Michiganders across the state.
