Rising Voices strongly condemns Congress and President Trump for passing and signing the so-called “Big Beautiful Bill” into law. We also condemn the members of the Michigan congressional delegation who voted in favor of the bill to pay for tax cuts to billionaires by decimating programs that are key to so many Michiganders.
Despite repeated warnings from advocates, organizations, and constituents, members of Michigan’s Congressional delegation voted to pass this inhumane legislation instead of standing up for the communities it will endanger. Instead of investing in our education system, infrastructure, and families, they have completely ignored calls for help from Michigan residents who desperately need to access SNAP and Medicaid programs that are already underfunded and struggling to serve our most vulnerable communities with the limited resources they have.
Rather than increase funding for these critical lifesaving programs and services that Michiganders desperately need, Trump and his Republican partners decided to spend $150 billion dollars on increasing deportation efforts in our country to terrorize our immigrant communities. ICE alone is receiving $45 billion dollars to dedicate to building more detention centers across the United States instead of focusing on repairing outdated and unsafe school buildings. This increase, and the cuts to federal Medicaid spending by around $1 trillion from 2025 through 2034, ignores the 78,577,962 people who will be impacted by cuts to Medicaid, including 120,000 Michiganders who will be kicked off of their Healthy Michigan plans. This will cause all Michiganders–including our Asian American families–to go into further medical debt and shut down many hospitals in rural areas that depend on Medicaid reimbursements in order to thrive. This will significantly reduce access to healthcare services for many of our most vulnerable communities.
Further, 1 in 4 Asian American children depend on SNAP benefits in order to sustain themselves, but these cuts will cause these children to go hungry. Congress and President Trump have effectively cut off the lifeline of thousands of Michiganders. During a time when many Michigan families are struggling, they decided to make everyone’s lives more difficult by transferring wealth from everyday Michiganders to the ultra wealthy.
The passage of the so-called Big Beautiful Bill is a gravely immoral and catastrophic act of policymaking. It is clear that we cannot depend on the Executive Office or our legislators to provide the crucial economic and healthcare security our families need and deserve.
We will not stand idly by as the consequences of this bill impact our communities. It is now up to us to battle for what is rightfully ours to begin with. Through organizing, advocacy and voter activation Rising Voices will continue to work here in Michigan to challenge these disastrous decisions made in Washington and hold our elected officials accountable for their actions.
